30 Days of Owning Our Focus: What January Taught Us

January wasn’t about rushing into the new year with pressure or unrealistic goals. Instead, we intentionally slowed down and committed to 30 days of focus, reflection, and realignment as we journeyed through Own Your Focus by Dr. Suzanne M. Howard.

Throughout the month, I shared this experience openly — showing up daily, book in hand, doing the work in real time. This wasn’t just a read-through. It was an invitation to pause, reflect, and become more aware of where our attention, energy, and priorities were truly going.

Why We Chose Own Your Focus

At the start of a new year, it’s easy to jump straight into planning and productivity. But before building anything new, focus has to be addressed. Own Your Focus challenges readers to examine distractions, misalignment, and internal noise that often keep us busy but unfulfilled.

This book gave us language for things many entrepreneurs feel but don’t always articulate — mental overload, scattered priorities, and the constant pull to be everywhere at once.

What the 30 Days Looked Like

Each day in January, we walked through the book together, one section at a time. Some days were affirming. Other days were convicting. All of them were necessary.

We talked about:

  • Becoming more intentional with our time and energy

  • Identifying where focus was leaking

  • Releasing guilt around rest and boundaries

  • Aligning daily actions with long-term vision

  • Recognizing focus as a form of self-leadership

  • This wasn’t about perfection — it was about awareness and growth.

Lessons That Stayed With Me

One of the biggest takeaways from this 30-day journey was the reminder that focus is not accidental. If we don’t choose it, something else will. Focus needs to become my identity.

Focus requires honesty. Focus requires boundaries. Focus requires alignment.

And most importantly, focus requires permission — permission to slow down, to say no, and to build with intention instead of urgency.

Get the Book and Start Your Own Journey

If this message resonates, I highly recommend grabbing your own copy of Own Your Focus by Suzanne Howard.

The book is available on Amazon, and it’s one worth reading slowly, intentionally, and with a notebook nearby.

Sometimes the most powerful shifts don’t come from doing more — they come from focusing better.

Moving Forward With Intention

January reminded us that clarity creates momentum. Focus fuels consistency. And alignment changes everything.

As we move forward into the rest of the year, my hope is that we carry these lessons with us — not just in business, but in life.

If you’re ready to own your focus, the resources are there. The journey has already begun.

Reflection Question: What did January reveal about where your focus has been — and where you want it to be going forward?
