How Someone Found Me on Google (and Why Your Business Needs to Be There Too)

Recently, I had a consultation with a woman who found me in the most simple yet powerful way: she typed “Black Owned Social Media Consultant” into Google.
She told me I was the very first name that popped up. She specifically wanted to work with someone of color who understood her perspective. Because I’ve built my business to show up online, she found me.
That moment hit me hard—in the best way. This is exactly why I made some tough decisions during my own rebrand journey.
Starting From the Bottom
When I started rebranding, I made the decision to completely start over. That meant deleting my old social media platforms and building everything from scratch. Why? Because I knew the only way I could truly help my clients was if I walked the same road they were on. I wanted to know what it felt like to build from the ground up—not just talk about it.
I also set a personal goal: to work with people I didn’t already know. That meant I had to put myself out there in new ways. The truth is, no one is coming to find you if there’s nothing out there to be found.
Why This Matters
This consultation was proof of that. The woman who found me doesn’t have social media yet. She came looking for someone to help her build her brand from the ground up—and that’s literally my lane. The fact that she landed on my profile and booked a consultation shows just how important it is to position yourself to be seen.
A Google Business Profile is one of the simplest but most powerful ways to do that. It:
Makes your business visible the moment people search.
Establishes credibility even before they click your website.
Connects you with people outside of your personal network or social media audience.
Building What People Are Searching For
This experience reminded me that people are out there searching for exactly what you do. They may never come across your Instagram or TikTok, but they will go to Google. If you’ve positioned yourself the right way, you’ll show up when they need you most.
For me, it was someone ready to start their business journey from scratch. For you, it could be a client, customer, or collaborator.
The Takeaway
If you don’t already have a Google Business Profile, take this as your sign. Set one up, fill it out completely, add photos, keep your information updated, and let it work for you.
Because here’s the truth: visibility isn’t optional. The right people are already searching for what you do. The only question is—will they be able to find you?
Embracing the Journey
Building a brand is a journey, not a destination. Each step you take is a part of your story. Embrace the challenges and celebrate the victories. Every consultation, every client, and every connection adds to your growth.
Creating Connections
Networking is essential. Reach out to others in your field. Collaborate and share ideas. You never know who might be looking for exactly what you offer. Building relationships can lead to unexpected opportunities.
Staying Consistent
Consistency is key in branding. Regularly update your profiles and engage with your audience. Share your journey, your insights, and your expertise. This not only builds trust but also keeps you top of mind for potential clients.
The Power of Authenticity
Be authentic in your approach. Share your story and your passion. People connect with genuine experiences. When you show up as your true self, you attract those who resonate with your mission.
Final Thoughts
Remember, your online presence is a reflection of your brand. Invest time in creating a space that represents you. Whether it’s through a Google Business Profile or social media, make sure you’re visible and approachable.
