Why a Ton of Followers Isn’t Always the Goal

When I first started my journey of showing up online, I thought the only way to be successful was to grow fast and grow big. I’d refresh my follower count daily (sometimes hourly), wondering why I wasn’t “there” yet—wherever there was supposed to be. Maybe you’ve felt that too. Like if your numbers aren’t climbing, then your message must not matter.
But here’s what I’ve learned: having a ton of followers isn’t the goal. At least, it shouldn’t be.
Let me break it down.
1. Followers Don’t Equal Connection
You can have 10,000 followers and still feel like you’re talking to a wall. I've seen people with massive platforms but no comments, no real engagement, and definitely no community. Then there are creators with 300 followers who sell out their services, have deep conversations in their DMs, and receive heartfelt messages of thanks weekly.
It’s not about how many eyes are on you—it’s about who’s really listening.
2. The Algorithm Can’t Measure Impact
Likes and views are nice, but they’re not the full story. Some of my most meaningful messages came from posts that didn’t perform well on paper. A friend who was encouraged. A stranger who said it helped them through a tough day. A client who finally felt seen.
When you’re in it for real connection and not just internet applause, one meaningful interaction can be worth more than 1,000 likes.
3. Big Platforms Come with Big Pressure
Don’t get me wrong—there’s nothing wrong with growth. But if you’re only chasing growth for the sake of numbers, you might find yourself burnt out trying to be someone you’re not.
I’ve worked with clients who went viral and suddenly felt boxed in by expectations. They couldn’t pivot, couldn’t slow down, and definitely couldn’t show up as their full self anymore. The pressure to perform and please everyone made them lose the joy of why they started in the first place.
Authentic growth may take longer, but it’s steady, sustainable, and rooted in you—not trends.
4. You Just Need the Right People
If you're a business owner, service provider, or someone trying to build something meaningful online, remember this: you don't need everyone—you just need your people.
You need those few who get it. The ones who show up consistently, who share your work without you asking, who refer you to others, who support your offers, and who believe in what you're building.
Would you rather have 20 loyal customers or 20,000 silent followers?
5. Serve Who’s Already in the Room
Instead of looking for who's not following you yet, what if you focused on the people who already are? Comment back. Start conversations. Thank them for being there. Create content with them in mind—not the invisible masses you think you need to impress.
When you take care of what you have, it grows naturally. And better yet, it grows with depth.
So, is growth wrong? Absolutely not.
But chasing numbers while overlooking the power of connection, authenticity, and impact will leave you exhausted and unfulfilled.
You don’t need a massive audience to make a difference. You need an honest voice, a clear message, and the courage to keep showing up—even when it’s quiet.
Big platforms are nice. But big purpose? That’s the real win.
